We recently shared signs that indicate that you need a new roof. The following are some signs that indicate that it is time to replace your roof:
- Multiple curled, missing, damaged, shingles
- Large-scale loss of granules on the shingles
- Exposed tar paper or plywood
- Extensive damage from severe weather events
- Evidence of rotten wood
- Multiple roof leaks
Damage to your roof may have occurred for any of several reasons: a faulty prior roof installation; tree damage, animal damage; weather events such as hail or wind damage; poor roof maintenance; or the wear and tear that occurs over the normal life expectancy of a roof. If your property has nearby trees or shrubs that may impede the reroofing process or be a possible source of future damage, they will need to be trimmed prior to reroofing. Trees close to/touching your roof also allow easy access for animals to get up on your roof.
Before starting the reroofing process, you will need to select your shingles. There are several styles, colors, and warranty options to choose from. Here at J-Conn Roofing, we have a fully stocked warehouse and showroom where we would be happy to review options, job details, and products. We will help you to make the best selection for your home and your new roof.
The first step of reroofing is the removal of your existing surface materials. Using special roofing tools, J-Conn removes the old shingles, tar paper, and nails necessary for new roof installation. If your house has multiple layers of roofing material, extra time or labor may be necessary to achieve optimal results.
Once the shingles and tar paper are removed, a thorough inspection of all decking, roof penetrations (vents, chimneys, etc), flashings, and previously damaged/leaking areas is performed. J-Conn Roofing inspects the decking and replace any decking that is rotten or damaged. We will also replace vents and flashings as needed. At this point J-Conn will install ventilation. We will determine the best option for your home, which may include ridge vent, turbines, or gravity vents. If your home has skylights, they will also have been inspected during the initial roof inspection and will be replaced at this time, if necessary. We will install metal drip edge, if your home does not currently have it. J-Conn will install ice and water shield around all penetrations, including vents, chimneys, and skylights, and when necessary in valleys and along all outer edges. We will install roofing felt (tar paper), on the roof. Next, we will install valley metal in all valleys. A valley is a section of roof where two different planes meet and water drains. Roofs with valleys require special attention to ensure adequate drainage and prevent the formation of leaks.
Lastly, your new shingles are installed. Your new roof will be both beautiful and functional, providing years of protection from the elements. A new roof is a big investment and a vital component of your home’s structure. Be sure to select a roofer that you can trust, like your local, dependable roofing contractor J-Conn Roofing.
